Race & Ethnicity Committee

Purpose and Mission

The purpose of the Committee on Race and Ethnicity is to promote advocacy and provide education and resources for issues on race and ethnicity.

The Co-Missioning statement for the Committee on Race and Ethnicity: Assisting housing officers in understanding how issues of race and ethnicity impact students and staff.



General Responsibilities:

  • To foster among housing officers the following set of supporting values: acceptance, accountability, empowerment, honesty, integrity, openness, respect, sensitivity, trust and understanding.
  • To assess the need for and evaluate the initiatives of the Association and its members related to race and ethnicity.
  • To provide educational opportunities and resources designed to facilitate personal growth and professional development related to race and ethnicity.
  • To support networking and to provide professional development and personal support in a global workplace.
  • To challenge practices and paradigms that interfere with the celebration of diversity.
  • Work with other issues committees to provide educational opportunities.

Specific Tasks:

  • Meet as a committee during the Winter Meeting to plan for the year.
  • Recruit new committee members at the annual conference.
  • Communicate with committee members, and other committees, and provide updates to the board of directors on a monthly basis.
  • Solicit and submit articles for each edition of Trends.
  • Sponsor proposals for program sessions at the annual conference.
  • Maintain contact with the Web Master regarding the Committee Web Page.
  • Maintain comprehensive records to the positions activities.
  • Orient and transmit records to the incoming committee chair.
  • Assess the organizational climate as needed.
  • Compile resources to be shared at the annual conference.
  • To foster among housing officers the following set of supporting values: acceptance, accountability, empowerment, honesty, integrity, openness, respect, sensitivity, trust and understanding.
  • In consultation with the Treasurer, develop and manage an approved committee budget and ensure completion of all financial obligations.

In an effort to provide our membership with information about the Presidential candidates stance on issues of diversity, the Issues Committees have compiled this list of the three front-runners for 2008.  We recognize that there are other candidates who may be running but limited information about their positions on issues of diversity were available.

John McCain (R)    www.johnmccain.com
Attended Episcopal High School, a private preparatory school in Alexandria, Virginia.  Graduated in 1954.  Attended the US Naval Academy; graduated in 1958.

Hillary Clinton (D)   www.hillaryclinton.com
Attended Maine East High School, a public school in Park Ridge, IL.  Graduated in 1965.  Graduated with Honors with a Political Science degree in 1969 from Wellesley.  Earned a J.D. from Yale Law School in 1973.

Barack Obama (D)   www.barackobama.com
 
Graduated in 1979 from Punahou School, a private, non-sectarian college preparatory school in Honolulu, Hawaii.  Went to Occidental College in Los Angeles, CA for two years before transferring to Columbia University where he graduated in 1983 with a degree in Political Science.  Entered Harvard Law School in 1988 and graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1991.  Served as a lecturer of constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School from 1993 until his election to the US Senate in 2004.
